Bokoharam, the deadliest terrorists group domicile in the Northern region of Nigeria, held sway for more than a decade, and may most probably be around for a long while.
And as at today, they’ve multiplied into several splinter groups namely; Herdsmen Terrorists, and Banditry Terrorists – all these are mere nomenclatures, yet they are Bokoharam.
IPOB, an emerging terrorists organization in the Eastern region, which parades itself as the freedom fighters for the people of that part, is now the newest armed guys around, definitely not in any way less lethal, violent, devastative, and destructive.
The big question is;
Why has the fight to conquer terrorists invasions not working, or failed in Nigeria?
Why does terrorism appear so unabating and unending?
Why does it seem like the Police and other law enforcement agencies are not helpful, unfruitful and or incapacitated in the flight to end terrorism?
How come the Eastern Terrorists, always often succeed in their violent attacks and invasion of Police Stations?
Well, the very first step is getting to understand the nature of this kind of war we’re confronting in the country today.
This is not your regular, defined conventional warfare.
It’s not a face me, I face you kind of war.
Terrorists world over, have often adopted the guerrilla attacks strategy to unleash their terrors, and make big statements, against the State.
Guerrilla fighters themselves are not synonymous to invincibility or indestructible.
They’re quite difficult, but surely defeatable when all the variables to crush them are present.
As a famous security expert once said;
“The guerrilla wins, if he does not lose.
And the conventional Police or Army loses if he does not win.”
That’s our common realities and nemesis here.
Take for example in the North.
When Bokoharam began, majority of religious leaders, politicians, and community groups viewed them as their own replica of the terrorists (some chose to call them militants) of the Niger Delta, that’ll guarantee them plenty of wealth from Government.
Many others embraced it from deeper religious prisms.
While others saw it as a window of opportunity to hookup with the international terrorists players like, Al Quaeda and Talibans.
The case of Umar Abdulmutallab who attempted to blow up USA flight is evident of this.
So, because the North was already saturated with locals, who were strongly influenced, and deeply sympathetic to the ideological beliefs of Bokoharam,
with just infinitesimal fewer liberal Muslims and Christians, that’s why it has been virtually impossible to end those Terrorists in that part.
The security agencies are not spirits to know who, and where the Bokoharam terrorists are.
They largely still depend on the highly uncooperative locals as Pointers.
AS FOR THE EASTERN part;
The question in South East today should NOT necessarily be; why have the Police or soldiers failed to crush the terrorists, before each invasion on their facilities?”
But the real BIG question should be, “why have the terrorists succeeded in their serial killings and attacks on the Police stations within the East now?”
The answer lies in almost equal similarities with the situation in the North, which is;
MASSIVE LOCAL SUPPORT!
The IPOB members with their now fugitive supreme leader, began their campaigns under the auspices of freedom fighters for the betterment of the people of that region.
Majority of the Locals deeply believe them, and genuinely excited at the prospects of some Eldorado and prosperous life of wealth and bliss under the promised land of Biafra, where, ironically, hatred, wickedness, violence, criminals, killings, and evil Terrorism will never exist and shall be things of the past.
This is the hope and faith of majority of locals there.
And when we talk about locals, let your myopic thoughts not be restricted to only those physically resident in the East.
For advanced technologies have made it possible for millions of diaspora Easterners, to share in the same sentiments, beliefs, supports and general sympathies for the IPOB ideologies, and acquiesced all their atrocities.
Of course, the diaspora ones are constantly here to dish out their twisted definitions of Terrorism.
They’ll inundate you with their perceived significant differences between the Bokoharam terrorists and the IPOB ESN,
Until if care is not taken, you’ll be persuaded to develop that kind of selective sense of justice, which makes them excuse their own terrorists.
Despite their more advanced and sophisticated weapons at the disposal of the government security forces,
the ragtag IPOB terrorists, have continued their attacks on the Police officers, and destruction of several police stations in the East.
Mao Zedong, a former Chinese leader, once said;
“The guerrillas can succeed, if ONLY they can move among the people, as the fish swim in the sea.”
And the IPOB terrorists have managed to do just so.
They are not just infiltrated, but are right there as part of the masses. The people’s own version of Terrorism.
So, no matter what most of their elites may try to do to convince them otherwise, the people simply see them as outsiders or Buhari’s supporters, but prefer to remain permanently and naturally attached to IPOB.
Despite their recent, very glaring criminalities, terrors and other heinous crimes, IPOB leader have convincingly infiltrated and manipulated the majority of the locals in the Eastern region.
Ethnic identity and solidarity are key, and the major reasons the Easterns are more sympathetic to their own terrorists, but have maintained very less, and less sympathetic concern about the Police officers who are now being slaughtered by IPOB terrorists.
The unsympathetic spirit of majority of easterners, towards the serial killings and slaughtering of security officers, has more than everything else, weakened, dampened, and dispirited the morale of the Police officers to combat terrorism and other crimes there.
Plus several betrayals within, coupled with highest apathy and unwillingness to volunteer information that would assist Police intelligence units, to proactiveness.
Many of the locals may not usually, ideologically agree with the IPOB terrorists in their trademark violence, and criminal actions, but they simply see them as a means to fight a greater evil, – the Outsider – that is, President Buhari, and federal government that’s denying them Biafra.
They’ve been wholly and thoroughly brainwashed by the Fugitive leader of the terrorists, to believe that the Police officers are simply agents of Buhari and his government, and that killing them is concomitant to defeating president Buhari.
This is why no local cares about the Police there.
This is the major reason the locals are less and less inclined and disinterested to volunteer and share information that could aid the law enforcement agencies to nap the terrorists, who obviously live among them today.
For twenty years now, America has suffered exactly the same fate in Afghanistan.
The locals prefers the Al Quaeda and later Talibans, despite all atrocities they’ve perpetrated against the locals and their women and still counting.
An average Afghan see their governmental Leaders as mere agents of America, and no matter how much they try to work hard to please the locals, they regard them as outsiders too.
That has been the bane of tackling terrorism there for two decades.
The alliance of the Locals with the Talibans is so huge that, America recently decided to pull out all their Forces from Afghanistan.
Let them cry their cry in peace and locally too.
The Terrorism you now witness in Nigeria – North and South – is hugely a people’s terrorism.
It will be defeated only when majority of the Locals decisively hate, reject, repudiate, condemn, disown, and radically turn against these terrorists, and cooperatively work in synergy with their law enforcement officers to eradicate every vestiges of crimes, criminalities and terrorism around their various localities.
