I made a Post yesterday, regarding how the massive Local support being enjoyed by Terrorists have militated against, hampered, frustrated or have
made the fight to end terrorism in Nigeria, very difficult.
Of course, I proffered solutions, when I advised that Locals must first resolve to hate and repudiate terrorism, among other things.
That piece does not pride itself as a one-solution-to-end all terrorism in Nigeria, neither did I try to attribute all the blames to the Locals, as if they’re the very first root cause of the grievances, which brought terrorism in contemporary Nigeria.
The only factor I pointed out was that, in fighting the deadly terrorists, Locals, and the massive solidarity they give to terrorists, have not helped matters for the law enforcement agencies at all.
Which was true and a statement of fact.
I’ve in the past, written other factors, including the very highest culpability of all – the government and the president whom, in no little measures, shares in the blames – the most.
But to my chagrin and shock, some IPOB people – surprisingly, even lawyers came out to say that;
IPOB and their ESN are not, and are STILL not one of the terrorists in Nigeria as at today. Haba!
Their position is; IPOB and it’s armed wing are simply freedom fighters.
Some outrightly denied ESN as armed terrorists, in one breath, whenever they are in good mood.
At other times, they simply rationalized, and excused whatever killings and violent crimes perpetrated by ESN, as justified acts of retaliation of the inhuman atrocities against their members in the past, by the government.
But, one thing that kept agitating my mind is whether Terrorism has assumed a different definition, or we’re now allowed to see it from our individual prisms.
Is there no standard and generally acceptable definition for terrorism and what constitutes terrorists group?
If there’s standard definition of Terrorism, are the obvious actions of IPOB or its ESN not properly caught up by that definition?
Terrorism has been generally defined as;
Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.
USA Institute of Peace defines terrorism as;
“The calculated use of violence or the threat of violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.”
Terrorism is not an Igbo word.
English people who own the language have already defined it for us.
All that’s now required of us is the honesty, and sincerity to identify all those who properly fit into that standard definition.
IPOB as at today, and from all their recent activities are nothing short of terrorists group.
You are free to justify their actions by referring to whatever grievance that may have aggravated the situation,
But you’re certainly not permitted to redefine the meaning of terrorism or terrorists group.
Again, the argument of how IPOB began by peaceful protests, goes to no issue at all.
How you began is not how you’re judged.
What’s most paramount is who you truly and honestly are right now.
Who mismanaged you is another kettle of fish.
How the president and government have failed to handle IPOB members in accordance with the law, is an entirely different topic for another day.
The questions are;
Are they now violent?
Do they collect?
Are they capable of atrocities?
Are they the ones responsible for the serial invasion of police stations and killings?
Then they’re terrorists group.
Don’t argue about how they began.
For Al-Quaeda did not start as a terrorist organization.
Bokoharam never did.
But today, bokoharam prides itself as the deadliest in Africa, and second in the entire world.
Al-Qaeda began as a logistical network to support Muslims fighting against the Soviet Union during the Afghan War; members were recruited throughout the Islamic world.
Terrorism or acts of violence wasn’t part of their initial objectives, and agenda.
But today, they’re on top of the list worldwide, and have generated plenty splinter groups and affiliates in all the countries they hold sway.
I can’t fathom how some seemingly intelligent people, would not understand when the group they passionately accepted, subscribed, supported and endorsed have switched roles, objectives, and have radically metamorphosed into full bombastic epic Terrorists.
Is it a case of moral burden of being branded as bloodthirsty terrorists? Abi you’re already battling with the blood guilt on your conscience?
Referring to other sources of terrorism does not necessarily obliterate the truth that yours have already started and potent.
You tried to call Buhari as enabler in chief of all terrorists in Nigeria; Did you ever see me argue that with you, or try to disprove that?
Wetin concern me with Buhari?
Whatever it may be, please don’t even try to foist a different definition of terrorism on us, by saying IPOB and ESN is not terrorists group.
For that would amount to huge dishonesty, and self deceit.
And only two options are available for you;
You either own your own version of Terrorism or denounce and repudiate them.
