The Rivers State Police Command, over the weekend invaded a notorious kidnapper’s den, rescued four kidnap victims while leaving five of the kidnappers dead.
The operation took place in the early hours of Thursday when men of the IGP Monitoring Unit and Anti Kidnapping Unit led by the Commander, DCP Benneth Igweh invaded the kidnapper’s den in a thick forest at Uzohia and Ubima, both in Ikwerre L.G.A of the state.
In the course of the operation, four kidnap victims namely Chuks Daniel, Cecilia Nnamdi, Miguel Jerry, and Miracle Okeke were rescued, and five of the kidnappers were killed, while other members of the gang escaped with wounds sustained during a gun fight that ensued between the police and the kidnappers. The four kidnap victims were among the passengers in a commercial bus who were kidnapped on March 18 while travelling from Port Harcourt to Onitsha.
It was gathered that the kidnappers had earlier released 9 of the victims, and were still keeping the remaining four, while awaiting payment of the ransom by the relations of the victims.
Meanwhile, it must be noted that the four victims came out of captivity unhurt, and they have since been released to their excited and grateful family members.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, this latest feat by men of the Nigeria police was in line with her commitment to rid the command of all criminal elements.
Speaking in the same vein, the Commissioner of Police, CP Usman A. Bele assured the people of Rivers state that the command is fully and irrevocably committed to eradicating all criminal elements within the state. He also called on the people to join hands with the police in fighting crime by providing useful information that can lead to the arrest of these criminals.
Some items recovered from the criminals during the operation includes one magazine loaded with 5 rounds, one AK47 rifle, One locally made pistol, 8 live cartridges, 2 pump action guns, and 2 machetes.
