Public Relations & 4 Crisis Management Strategies

What is Crisis Management in Public Relations?

As organizations and brand owners, we have to always have at the back of our minds that crisis can one day occur in the workplace, or to our brand. And if it does happen, how can we handle this through PR?

In the course of interacting, crisis can occur. In the course of political parties trying to win elections to occupy certain political offices, crisis can also occur.

Besides, as organizations and groups strive to win bigger share of the market and win more customers than competitors, crisis can also occur. Crisis is part of everyday life; business included.

What is Crisis?

Crisis is any unplanned event or incident that can occur with a negative impact on the reputation and image of a company, a brand, or the Personality of a person. Take for instance; Mr ‘A’, after taking a bottle of a particular soft drink dies immediately, or a fire incident at the soft drink’s factory that kills 50 people. This is a crisis situation because the unplanned incident can have a negative impact on the brand itself, and the company in general. At this point, let’s understand what Crisis Communication is.

Crisis Management Communications: This is the effort made by companies or organizations to communicate with the publics when an unexpected incident occurs that can negatively affect the company’s image and its brand of products.

Crisis Communication- planning before crisis occurs.

  • Have a system in place that will allow the organization or the department handling crisis to respond quickly to crisis situation without wasting time to communicate such crisis.
  • Try as much as possible to identify areas that can easily bring about crisis, and put in place measures to contain such crisis if it eventually happens.¬†A company must do everything in its power to protect its name, reputation, and brand.
  • Develop a policy framework that can minimize crisis situations.
  • Develop a crisis management team to deal with, and handle crisis if it eventually occurs.
  • Assign different persons with different roles with a team leader in case of crisis.
  • Assemble all the human and material resources that you will need to handle crisis situation.
  • Provide the necessary guidelines that will give directions on what to do in case of crisis.Crisis Management

How Can You Manage Crisis?

Act decisively: If crisis occurs in a company or in an organization, let the company be the right source of information to the public through the PRO or corporate affairs manager. If that is not done, and on time, the media and public analysts will provide only their own side of the story to the public, and that may not be favourable to the company.

Respond Quickly: Delayed response when crisis occurs is very dangerous. It is very important to respond quickly through various media channels available inorder to send out true version of what happened. Lack of quick response to crisis situation can give the public and media houses the opportunity to speculate on the matter which can be even more damaging to the company than the crisis itself.

Responding quickly will afford the company the opportunity to let people and the media know that efforts are being made to handle the crisis, as this can go a long way in reducing tension.

Be forthright and honest: A company should quickly admit through its spokesperson when at fault, and not try to shy away from the truth, because people are more likely to forgive an organization that is open and ready to address negative issues. Besides, if it is noticed that the image of the company is affected, a redemptive measure should quickly be devised.

Be available to answer questions: The spokesperson of a company must be available to answer questions inorder to reduce tension that may come as a result of the crisis. If he or she does not have enough information to give an in-depth press release, he or she should issue a statement until a press release is done. This is a strategy to prevent too many questions from coming to him or her.
