Nigeria, A Nation At War With Itself

By Azubuike Ihemeje, Esq

While we were grappling with the multiple abductions of students in Zamfara and Niger states of Nigeria, respectively; a fortnight ago, something very strange and untoward was happening right inside the city of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

We know that Borno is the bedrock of the highest criminal terrorists in Nigeria; which you people christened Bokoharam, and later adjusted to herdsmen; and the latest baptismal nomenclature, bandits.

But, the truth is, most of their nefarious activities are carried out outside Maiduguri town. They’ve largely concentrated on the outskirt LGAs.

However, about two weeks ago,
these demons in human form decided to launch some heavy attacks on Maiduguri City, killing hundreds, devastating virtually every infrastructure at sight, and leaving the entire town in total blackout, as they destroyed the major Power Station that supplies electricity to the city.

People were stranded, helpless and anguished in the aftermath of the terrorists attacks.

It seems like the Boko wing now feels neglected in the Gumi rackets, as if nobody cares for them, or the government appears to be distracted by the newest guys of Gumi wing.

So they had to make a statement to demonstrate that they’re fully in existence, and very much potent.

So it happened that the Electricity Company in that State later mobilized their Staff and materials to repair and restore Power to the beleaguered city.

Voom!

The worst occurred.

Unknown to everyone that terrorists had already laid highly sophisticated, lethal land mines around the axis, as soon as the workers arrived and trooped into their work site,
so also heavy explosives with very high densities reminiscent of the Hiroshima boom of the Second World War, immediately exploded and comprehensively killed all the workers instantly, rendering them unrecognizable.

Maiduguri is still in total blackout till now.

The Nigerian Government is still negotiating with kidnappers of students.

Bandits are not criminals yet.

Nobody has been arrested yet.

The military is still talking about security reports and intelligent reports.

And we’re hearing some of the soldiers have already ported to the terrorists camp for greener pastures and raw cash.

The military has tried their best, but unfortunately nothing substantially positive is coming.

Some people are already accusing the military of compromise, collusion, and involvement in the unwholesome rapport with terrorists racketeering.

They say, anywhere soldiers enter, the choppings no dey finish because they’ll keep instigating the crisis for their own choppings; namely, huge special duty allowances.

I don’t want to believe these allegations.

Still, I’ve always said that world over, internal security is solely the business of the Police.

I also know that the constitutional duty of the military is to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

It is only the Police that has the national spread, to site Police Divisions and out Stations across the country.

Oya, let the government ask the Soldiers to return to their barracks, and fully empower the Police to do their constitutional duties of internal security, provide the Police with the necessary logistical supports, and watch them perform.

Let’s re-strategize to say, only the Police can call for military backups, but should always lead internal securities, and not this lope-sidedness we’ve witnessed over the years that hasn’t worked for good.

In every warfare, there’re people that benefit from it.

It’s possible that we may have people who are cashing out of this present status quo.

I’ve always referred to the wonderful security situation we witnessed during unparalleled performance of AIG Mustapha Dandaura, as the then Commissioner of Police.

He was fully in charge of his brief, and never surrendered his constitutional duties of internal security to the Military.

He collaborated with them, but ensured that ALL Police Divisions were totally responsible for protecting their jurisdiction.

If any needed backup, he knew exactly what to do.

Besides, he released all the monthly money, as provided by the Governor to all the DPOs, Area commanders and Tactical Team leaders.

No wahala!

Everybody protected his territory, throughout his period as CP Rivers State.

He never ever negotiated with criminals, nor beg the Governor to help talk with criminals, for where!

He’ll manage them before people will wake up finish.

You’ll only hear, Lucifer is gone.
Don this and that is no more.

No plenty talks. No big, big grammars.

And the State witnessed unprecedented developments as a result of the fine security condition then.

People were trooping in to invest in Port Harcourt then.

That was practical Policing.

But Nigeria said it is the military that will control internal security. Ok.

That former CP of Rivers State, I’m sure, will never negotiate with criminals, if only if he’s allowed to serve as the Inspector General of Police.

There’re certain positive security decisions he took, in the over all interests of Rivers State then, and things turned out well.

I’m very sure, he can replicate exactly what he did in miniature sense in Rivers State, in a larger scale for you people of Nigeria.

But we still be blockheads, we no dey hear something.

We don’t keep track records.

We just move like that.

Pray we don’t move from frying pan to greater fire than we already are.

Nigeria is still at full blown war.
