Members of the National Assembly have expressed their shock at the passage of Chike Akunyili, husband to late Dora Akunyili, former NAFDAC boss.
Chike Akunyili was gruesomely murdered by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, 28th Sept in Nkpor, Anambra state.
Eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident said that the late Chike Akunyili was gasping for breath, on the ground, and no one came to his rescue.
In his words, “The man was just on the floor, panting and gasping for breath. I’m sure he would have been saved if he was rushed to the hospital at that time. But nobody did that. Instead they all brought out their phones to video him, while he was struggling for life. He eventually died”, he said.
Another eyewitness had this to say, “The tension was very high. I witnessed it. Fear will not even allow you go near it, private and commercial drivers left their vehicles on the main road and flew for their dear lives.
“And those gunmen were parading up and down. I’ll not lie you it was scary. As if that was not enough, his white Hilux was set ablaze around 8pm. People would have helped not minding the level of injury but everybody was afraid of being implicated afterwards.
Police station is about 10 mins drive to the venue of the incident, yet no security personnel showed up, and you expect ordinary citizen to help and be doomed for life.”
Sources who pleaded anonymity have opined that the death of Dr Chike may not be unconnected with the role his late wife played in eradicating corruption in the health sector.
They feel it may be a reprisal attack by aggrieved cabals whose businesses was destroyed by Dora’s fight against corruption.
The state police command is yet to issue a statement on this incident.
